An Aging Network Under Pressure

Many of the country's water systems were built in the decades following World War II. While these assets have provided reliable service for generations, many are now reaching the end of their operational life.

Industry research estimates that utilities across the United States and Canada experience approximately 260,000 water main breaks every year, costing around $2.6 billion annually in repairs and emergency maintenance. Nearly 20% of installed water mains are already beyond their expected service life but remain in operation because replacement funding has not kept pace with demand.
